🎲🎲🎲🎲🎲 What's the rules for the show? We got the dice! We got ideas! Let's talk and see!

“iacta alea est” (lat.“The die is cast”) — This is how it often feels nowadays. "Omg!", what’s next you might think. "Not just another depressing show on climate change, gruesome armed conflict or unresolveable inequality around the globe."

No worries, you are mistaken. At Vienna Struggle we made it our mission to shed light on slightly more posh, yet still relevant struggles — typical Viennese struggles.

So what classifies as a Vienna Struggle?

Here are some pointers, just a slur of though:

🧐 The budgets to develop engaging narratives in the artworld is out of reach behind an institutionalized glass ceiling of trigger words and neo-despotism disguised as identity politics. If one hasn’t been born into the right social group, all that is left to us is to commodify our ideals, our initial spark into competitive replaceable “content” on social media.

🧐 The processing power to train adequate AI models is controlled by big tech, who are seriously talking about introducing basic income instead of sharing their profits from all the data that solidified their rise to power. We all have been instrumentalized for profit and control in ways we can’t fully see, yet.

🧐 Power & money is more centralized than ever before in human history. Art is once again at a peak of institutionalization through semi-intellectual bullshit bingo with windows for creative freedom shut down systematically, social media punishes risk takers with shadow banning and rewards normalization with attention of never before seen proportions, but also because there seems to be just no affordable space and or sustainable community for human to human activity IRL (in real life).

🧐 There is just not enough bike trails in town.

🧐 AI system are going to make music creation obsolete for most financially rewarding application. We are paid for talks rather than concerts, and actually we have to pay for the venue, too!

It seems like the die is cast. Meaning that events have passed a point of no return. A singularity indeed!

But, listen up! Here is what we do. Let’s use the little freedom we got left and turn to the game - in a way invert the game by not just symbolically throwing the dice, trying our luck to collectively imagine a spectacular speculative future for one night.

We are inverting everything, from IRL and AFRL (away from real life), fact and fiction, sound and body, question and answer in a what seems randomly arranged program. Yet, our urge and need to play together is bigger than any conformity. We came here by ourselves - yes, even though it’s rather cold outside already and we are not paid to do so - our own blood and sweet and we don’t give a fuck, how our asses aren’t exposed enough - again, it’s too cold anyhow -, how our films are too long - 3 minutes that is and of course we don’t wanna cut it -, our melodies too quirky - we didn’t bother to edit - and our topics to advanced for your internalized algorithms - duh, we so smart. 🧐🧐

Vienna Struggle is show-casing and living a practical possible future - a collective, playful and creative activity for a post-singularity night out in Vienna.

We got some possible program points for the night, but that might change. We keep you posted.

Thanks to all the artists that just roll with it!

During the first Lockdown, after the pandemic in 2020, two flatmates, Adel and Flávia, who had been coping with precarious neoliberalism in Vienna, decided to make a film in their attic. They had to transform into the characters they’d created, as the new-born monstrous who would retaliate. The whole production was shot while they were isolated in the house and had no contact to the world outside, which led into a surrealistic performance of the producers and the cast.

The psychological thriller film “HOWL 2020” takes current political issues such as isolation, mental health and anti-fascism, and depicts them within a surreal performative narrative. In a sealed-off attic, the story of an encounter between two people, both outcasts, unfolds in a constant lurch between terror, cohesion, love, exploitation and violence. “HOWL 2020” is an anthropophagic fairy tale, an act of symbolic revenge that nevertheless finds reconciliatory moments despite its bitterness.

The film is edited by Stefan MANUEL-EGGENWEBER & Flávia MUDESTO and mixed by Bernhard HAMMER.
